GABLE YOUNG
I am inspired by the everyday chaos of ordinary life. Whether it be the pile of mail next to the flower arrangement or the dirty dishes still sitting on the table, the perfect imperfection of day-to-day living is intriguing to me. Life can be uncertain, troubling, and chaotic, but amongst all the challenges of life, I search for its beauty, and strive to convey that in my work.
Spending time outside in nature brings me peace and inspiration. While working in my garden or hiking, I study the interplay of colors and textures in the plants, weeds and insects. My desire is to show the details and subtleties, as well as the intensities and vibrancies of nature in my art.
The smooth and lush flow of oil paint make it, for me, the most sumptuous of mediums. While most of my work is oil on canvas, I find it important to experiment with the use of other surfaces, such as MDF boards and Baltic cedar. In addition to oils, I work in acrylic, which allows me immediacy in layering colors and ease of transportation when I work outdoors. Tempera gives me the ability to work on a paper surface with spontaneity.
In my family drawing was used to convey ideas, therefore it was not a surprise that I chose to study art in college. I have my Certificate of Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Teaching Certificate from The University of the Arts
For the past 32 years, I have exhibited my paintings and clay work throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. I have 18 years of experience teaching art in both schools and my private studio. I enjoy working with others to help them expand and express their creativity.
My experience directing students in the production of art to be used for plays challenged me to move beyond my self-imposed limitations. I realized that I could conceive an idea, then paint or build it within a limited timeframe. The result being that I am not afraid to experiment with concepts and ideas in my work.
